“The Unforgettable Heroism of Shavarsh Karapetyan: From Rescuing Lives to Building Empires”

Shavarsh Karapetyan, a retired Armenian swimmer, found himself in an extraordinary event in 1976. Upon finishing a grueling 26 km (16 mile) run, he was startled by a resounding crash and soon discovered a trolleybus careening out of control, plunging into a reservoir. Submerged 10 meters (33 ft) below the surface and roughly 25 meters (82 ft) from the shore, the dire situation unfolded before his eyes.

Despite the formidable circumstances of the water, contaminated with sewage, and hindered visibility due to murky sediment, Karapetyan displayed immense bravery as he dove headfirst, determined to aid those trapped. Employing the force of his legs, he valiantly shattered the back window of the trolleybus. With unwavering resolve, he proceeded to rescue an astonishing 46 of the 92 passengers on board, thereby saving the lives of 20 individuals.

Nevertheless, the frigid water and shards of glass inflicted numerous lacerations upon Karapetyan, forcing him into a 45-day hospitalization. Complications further arose, including pneumonia and sepsis. While he eventually recuperated, the damage sustained by his lungs tragically curtailed his prosperous swimming career.

“I was well aware of my limitations in saving lives, and the fear of making a mistake haunted me. The darkness enveloping the depths made it arduous to discern anything clearly. In one instance, amidst my dives, I inadvertently grasped a seat instead of a passenger, forever haunting me in my nightmares. I could have saved a life instead,” he recounted.

In 1985, Karapetyan encountered a raging inferno, where several individuals found themselves trapped within a blazing building. Without hesitation, he dauntlessly entered the structure, embarking on a mission to rescue those in peril. Unfortunately, he suffered severe burns during the harrowing operation, necessitating another period of hospitalization.

In his later years, Karapetyan relocated to Moscow and embarked on a new venture, establishing a shoe company named “Second Breath.” Astonishingly, he continues to thrive to this day, actively managing his business while leaving an indelible mark on the world.
